Once you figure how hold, how to arrange the item you are resealing and how best to swipe you should be set. My advice practice on an empty bag first it does take a few attempts to get the hang of the actual seal from one side to the other!
- push down too lightly or move too fast, doesn't seal
- move too slow or push too hard, melts the plastic
Once you get the feel for it, it works pretty well! One thing to note is that it takes a minute or two to heat up to be effective.
Downsides:
- It has a magnet on the bottom, but don't expect much from it as it is really weak.
- The only other downside I'm seeing so far is the cutting blade. As someone who works in a warehouse, blades dull rather quickly. While this blade will last longer because it doesn't get used as much as a utility blade, it will still wear down. There doesn't seem to be a way to replace it besides buying a new unit altogether.
Sadly that doesn’t work well. I’ll just opt to use it at it was intended.
I also like that it is small and portable as well as rechargeable.
On standard bags, it's difficult to start at the edge. Vacuum seal bags already have a sealed strip at the edges. Depending on how you intend to use this, it may be an important consideration.
This is not too hard if you have a single thickness bag (so total of 2 thicknesses in the sealer, to be sealed together. If you miss an area, you have to go back and retrace through it. As the instructions say, make sure the new line intersects the old ones.
I had difficulty because my bag has accordion folds on the sides. It's a bag that's designed to be heat sealed. You open it, pour in the contents, and seal across the top. Then there's a ziplock on the side that you can open to get at the contents, and seal that back every time you open it. To open wide to accept the initial filling, it has accordion folds on the sides. Unfortunately, this puts four thicknesses rather than two in the heater, and I had to go very slowly, and it seems like maybe I sealed it, or at least nearly sealed it so that if I fold the bag over, it will leak air very slowly.
I've never tried the sealer that does a whole line at once, but I am imagining that that type can seal these bags more easily. But they take more space, they're not battery powered, and they don't attach magnetically to your refrigerator door. This heat sealer also has a cutter, in case you want to seal, then cut off the seal.
The instructions are almost microscopic. Bring good eyesight or a magnifying glass. But it's pretty self explanatory, and I just told you most of what it says.
